The Canada-US-Ontario-Michigan Border Transportation Planning / Needs and Feasibility Study examined existing and future cross-border transportation problems within the geographic area of Wayne County and City of Detroit in Michigan as well as the County of Essex and the City of Windsor in Ontario. This study examined these transportation problems within the broader geographic context of Southeast Michigan and Southwest Ontario Region (see map 1) which included, but were not limited to:

(b) the rail linkages connected to the tunnel between Port Huron and Sarnia.

In addition, areas that are linked with or affected by the Windsor-Detroit international crossings were also considered. The Greater Toronto Area connected via Highway 401, and the area of Ohio southerly connected via I-75, and Illinois and West via I-94 are examples.
